      My introduction to Eleanor Dark () came at school in when I was given No Barrier as a prize. Published in it was the last one of a trilogy of historical novels comprising also The Timeless Land (), and Storm of Time () but although I loved No Barrier, it was a long time before I stumbled across the other two titles in OpShops. Eleanor Dark AO (–), writer, was born and educated in Sydney but moved to the Blue Mountains after she married in Born Eleanor ‘Pixie’ O’Reilly, she began her career as an author writing poems and stories for journals including the The Home and the Bulletin.

    Eleanor Dark’s radicalism found an early expression in her first novel, Slow Dawning (), where an unmarried woman doctor contemplates the virtue of brothels for women who choose not to marry.
